IVCA member – Dr. Silke Meermann

My name is Dr. Silke Meermann; I am a small animal veterinarian in Bergkamen, Germany.

After having graduated from Vet School in 2002, curiosity made me sign up for Veterinary Chiropractic with the former European Academy for Veterinary Chiropractic in 2004. In 2005 I completed both the EAVC and the IVCA-exams and have been an IVCA-member ever since.

The way Chiropractic – and also Osteopathy and Physiotherapy – understand health and well being really has changed my life: Looking at things from a functional perspective instead of looking for names and diagnoses that tie an individual down to a disease or syndrome, really opened up my mind.

As I have always been a „dog-person“, I took a small animal Physiotherapy Training and a Training in Structural Canine Osteopathy after that. At the same time I tried to learn as much as possible about different dog sports and behavioral training issues.

This is where I met Christiane Gräff, a Human Physiotherapist and Osteopath with Special Training in Sports Physiotherapy – also dedicated to dogs.

In countless talks and sessions we tried to combine our knowledge and fantasy – me coming from the Veterinary and Chiropractic Background – Christiane coming from the Human and Physiotherapeutic and Osteopathic side – to come up with osteopathic treatment techniques for dogs – and then put that together into our first book („Osteopathie bei Hunden“). The book is available as a hardcover textbook in German, it has also been translated into Spanish (Osteopatía en el perro).

www.ulmer.de/usd-7118525/osteopathie-bei-hunden-.html

As we saw – and still see – a lot of problems in connection with certain types of dog sports and the way dogs are trained, a couple of years later we felt the strong need for another Textbook on Sport Physiotherapy for dogs – this is how we came up with our second book („Sportphysiotherapie für Hunde“). It is also available as a hardcover textbook as well as an e-book.

The Animal Chiropractic Freedom Rally is going to be more than a virtual summit — it’s a movement to protect and advance animal chiropractic legislation.

Event will be February 28th, 2026 (9am to 3:30pm US central)

100% virtual — attend from anywhere

Register here: www.makingstridesforanimalchiropractic.com/freedomrally

Topics to be covered: Philosophy, animal chiropractic history, upper cervical for horses, chicken adjusting, farm animal adjusting, intro to exotic animal adjusting, animal chiropractic business, social media, hindlimb adjusting for canines, and more!

Why this event is being hosted for charity to support law reform?

Access to animal chiropractic care is still limited by outdated or restrictive laws in many states. This event is being hosted to raise funds and awareness for animal chiropractic law reform, helping protect practitioners and expand access for the animals and families who need animal chiropractic care.

When we come together as a profession, we don’t just learn — we create change.

IVCA Member Spotlight

Hello, my name is Mari Bardalen Wiggen.

I am a human and animal chiropractor, living near Hønefoss in Norway. The reason I wanted to become a chiropractor was to be able work with animals. I graduated from University of Southern Denmark in 2008, and went to Backbone Academy to get certified in animal chiropractic. In 2016 I took the IVCA exam and became a member. I also have been involved in the board of the Norwegian Veterinary Chiropractic association for many years.

I have been working with horses since 2009, the last two-tree years also with dogs. I am specially interested in the communication between horse and rider, and therefore I also do rider analysis to help improve the function of both rider and horse.
I am greatful every day for having the best job possibly!

2023 IVCA Conference and AGM

2023 IVCA Conference and AGM

Our former IVCA secretary Helga Thorwartl passed away on the 4th of October.

Helga started to build up a functioning IVCA secretary on the 29th of July 2006. She was a reliable partner for our members  and the school owners. Her calm, determined nature was always a great help for everyone involved in the IVCA.
To enjoy her retirement Helga gave the office in younger hands and handed over to Kirstin. Helga’s last years were marked by serious illness. On the 4th of October she has lost that fight and passed away. We will always keep her in honorable memory. Our sincere condolences go to her family.

For the MC: Marion Thurner, Claudia da Rocha Patricio, Victoria McKinney, Jennifer Henrickson
